What Depression & Emotional Heaviness Can Feel Like
Most people get this wrong about depression relief counseling. They believe it looks a certain way–feeling lost, feeling negative, sad–but at times it looks like nothing.
depression:
→ you go through the day.
→ you do what you need to do.
→ but you don’t really feel present.
depression:
→ exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix
→ losing interest in things you once loved
→ small tasks suddenly feeling huge
→ feeling heavy for no obvious reason
but the scariest thing is depression can be hard to spot. It can be years of built-up emotion such as: (1) disappointment, (2) grief, (3) stress, (4) things you never processed.
And we both know, past this point, “just think more positive” doesn’t fix it. One thing becomes another. Then suddenly, you’re carrying too much while still trying to keep up with the demands of the world.
Why Emotional Heaviness Builds Up
Emotional heaviness: unresolved emotions start affecting how you think, feel, behave, and function day-to-day.
And sometimes, this doesn’t come from one big event—it comes from months, sometimes years, of emotions you’ve never (1) processed and (2) solved.
A painful experience happens → you push it aside.
Something else happens → you push it aside.
And I don’t blame you. Life is ever-demanding. Asking for time, energy, productivity, and more—therefore, it’s hard to prioritize what matters most: you.
So you keep moving. Living. Working. Paying bills and doing what life requires of you. But the feelings don’t simply disappear–they stack, build on each other.
And over months or years, all of those unresolved moments can become a weight that’s difficult to explain—even harder to overcome.
And that’s why sometimes, the answer isn’t:
“Just be positive.”
Sometimes, you first have to understand what you’re carrying.
Small Ways to Find Relief Day to Day
Sometimes, you need emotion relief today–not next week or month, not after life has ‘slowed down.’
① Go outside
→ get some sunlight.
→ take a short walk.
→ even ten minutes can help.
② Name what you’re feeling
Instead of:
“I just feel off.”
Try:
“I feel disappointed.”
“I feel overwhelmed.”
“I feel angry.”
Naming the emotion and becoming aware of it can help you gain control, relief, and less stress.
③ Talk to someone
Call a friend.
Text someone you trust.
Tell them what’s going on.
You don’t have to explain everything, no. You just can’t isolate yourself anymore.
④ Give yourself permission to slow down
Days feel different. Monday–you may feel good. Tuesday—horrible. Remove the pressure to perform well. That includes resting without feeling guilty.
And although these things can help you feel better in the moment–the problem almost always goes deeper than what you can fix in a single day.
That’s where my approach can actually help you.
How Don Approaches Depression Relief Counseling & Emotion Relief
Depression relief counseling isn’t just about talking about how you feel — I want to understand why you feel this way, because that’s where real emotion relief comes from.
The process focuses on specific experiences that may still be affecting how you think, feel, and respond today.
For example:
something painful happens.
You don’t fully process it.
You move on.
Then something similar happens years later—and that old emotion comes back.
The goal is to work through those experiences instead of simply talking about them.
And many people expect this to take months or years. It doesn’t.
I’ve spent more than 20 years doing this work—and, if being honest—have experienced my own difficult season. Including divorce and years of financial struggle.
Ultimately, this is what led me to do this work.
How This Fits Into Longer-Term Emotional Work
Feeling better isn’t always a one-session process.
Sometimes, there’s more to work through.
That’s why Don offers different levels of support—from single sessions to longer programs, including his 12-week program.
The goal isn’t to:
→ numb the emotion
→ ignore it
→ pretend everything is fine
It’s to understand what you’re feeling, work through it, and learn how to move forward without carrying the same weight anymore.
Serving Birmingham, Alabama
Don has offered depression relief counseling and emotion relief to individuals across Birmingham and the surrounding suburbs for more than three decades, helping people move through exactly this kind of weight — not in just an ordinary way, but in the context of real Birmingham lives: careers built around UAB and the city’s healthcare and business sectors, families spread across Homewood, Vestavia Hills, and Hoover, and the ordinary pressure of keeping it together in a growing city.
